STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS: TRAINING FOR CLAIMANTS

Claimants discuss how to tackle their current issues at Stand Up For Your Rights Sessions organsied by LUSLUS and Unite Community discuss and distribute 'Know Your Rights' factsheets for claimants at Jobcentres

LONDON UNEMPLOYED STRATEGIES organises ‘Stand Up For Your Rights’ sessions bringing together unemployed and employed workers to share the information, skills and resources they need to combat severe pressures applied to claimants by an increasingly punitive benefits system.

What distinguishes our approach from the conventional client-professional relationship (e.g. the CAB) is that we develop self-help support with groups of claimants, thereby enabling them to develop sharing and collective responses to problems which result in their empowerment . Through peer mentoring, the strong help the weaker and the weak get stronger. They then act as advocates for each other in dealings with Jobcentre Plus, Work Capability Assessments etc.

This is backed up by hard-core advice and guidance contained in our information packs, including the ‘Know Your Rights’ leaflets which we produce jointly with Unite Community and which are well-respected and used across the UK.
